FSC Mata mata (Manbarklak) is regularly available in the forests of Precious Woods, located in the Amazon region of Brazil. The trees get about 35 meters high, with a trunk diameter varying from 40 to 60 cm. The trunks are most of the time straight and the sapwood is maximum 10 cm wide.
Appearance:
The heartwood has a greyish brown to dark brown colour. The whitish sapwood is easy to distinguish. Between the sapwood and the heartwood a zone of juvenile wood can be found. The grain is straight and the texture is fine to medium coarse.
Working properties:
Machining is very difficult. Specially with sawing the experiences are not good due to the high silica content, which causes a blunting effect. Therefore it is only used as round wood piles, pointed or square edged.
Durability:
Very durable
Uses:
Mata mata is only used as piles. In Brazil and the United States also as utility (telegraph) posts. In Germany it is used for many years as sea-defence at the Baltic Sea.
