FSC louro gamela is available in large quantities in the forests of Precious Woods, located in the Amazon region of Brazil. The large trees get a diameter till about 1,2 m, with a straight and cylindric shape. It is possible to produce larger dimensions.
Appearance:
The heartwood has a beige colour, hardly darkening after exposure. The yellow wihite sapwood is easy to distinguish. Louro gamela has a greasy touch. It has a pleasant (sweet) odour. The grain is mainly straight, and now and then wavy and interlocked. The texture is medium fine
Working properties:
Machining goes well. With sharp tools a smooth surface can be achieved. Pre-drilling is recommended. With gluing (also for fingerjointing) are the results good. Research is going on for gluing of louro gamela in constructive uses. Finishing goes well. Drying of thinner dimensions goes quickly, but thicker dimensions requires much craftsmanship. The timber is sensitive for collapse
Durability:
Durable
Uses:
This medium heavy and easy to utilise heartwood is used for many years in several exterior applications. E.g. garden furniture, cladding (substitute for western red cedar), constructions, parkbenches and boardswalks. It is also used for mouldings and window frames. In several uses it also replaces bangkirai
