FSC Cupiuba is available in large quantities in the forests of Precious Woods, located in the Amazon region in the north of Brazil. The large trees have a diameter till about 1,2 m and have a height till 40 m. The trunk is rather straight. It is possible to produce larger dimensions in Cupiuba.
Appearance:
The heartwood has a wide colour variation from brick-red till yellow brown and darkens slightly after exposure. It has a medium lustre. The lighter coloured sapwood is sharply demarcated from the heartwood. Remarkable is the sour smell, which partly disappears after drying. For interior uses a finish (lacquer) can avoid this smell. The grain is often irregular, sometimes interlocked and the texture is medium fine.
Working properties:
Machining goes relatively easy. With some extra care, interlocked grain can also get smooth. With finishing are good experiences in interior uses, where with gluing are less experiences. Pre-drilling is recommended. Drying has to be done carefully because of the high risks of distortion and checking.
Durability:
Durable
Uses:
Cupiuba can be used in several situations:
interior: e.g. flooring/parquet (decorative appearance)
exterior: e.g. constructions, decking, poles, sound barriers, garden timber.
