Sustainable forest management consists of several steps which, although they may vary depending on local conditions, are always formulated in a forest management plan. FSC certification entails regular reviews of both the plan itself and its implementation. In 1997 Precious Woods Amazon was the first company in the Amazon to be certified in accordance with the criteria of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) under the Rainforest Alliance's Smartwood program (in cooperation with Imaflora). Precious Woods' Costa Rican plantations were first certified in 2000 and Precious Woods Nicaragua, founded two years ago, is expected to achieve certification in 2006. Precious Woods Europe, Precious Woods Amazon and Precious Woods Pará also hold exclusive Chain of Custody Certificates attesting that all the goods supplied originate from FSC-certified forests.
