Properly harvested trees hardly damage the neighbouring trees
The maximum allowable cut depends on the total number of trees identified per species and plot. At least 20% of the trees which could be harvested are left standing as seed bearers, along with trees along watercourses and trees which are difficult to reach.
In the forest, the felling teams always work with detailed instructions defining every step to be taken. If for any reason a tree selected for harvesting proves to be unsuitable, it will not be felled. Consequently, in Brazil we currently harvest not more than 15-20m3 of roundwood per hectare during the first rotation cycle, even though the observed growth of the trees would allow us to harvest a maximum of 40m3 of roundwood per hectare in each 25-year rotation cycle.
For quality reasons only the best trees with large diameter trunks are felled.
