Resource: flammability of wood Print E-mail

Increasingly, local governments and fire brigades are requesting information about the flammability of building materials. In the near future CE marking on some timber products will be obligatory. The classification of fire behaviour must therefore be determined according to European standards. We are testing 12 species that are used in decking and galleries according to the European standards AND ISO 9239-1 and ISO 11925-2. Realistic end products are used, to ensure relevant results. The tests are carried out by Efectis Rijswijk, the former TNO centre for fire security. For each species the test is repeated three times. Some of the species reach class Bfl and Cfl (former class T1-T3 to be largely contactable). At the end of the year we will be able to give the test results. Enclosed photograph illustrates how the test goes. For more questions feel free to contact us.

During the test. The hindmost beam has already progressed 30 cm whereas the first beam still no more then 5 cm has burned.

Beams before the test. First (dark yellow) the bests and the back performed worst.

After test appears have reached the hindmost beam almost 40 cm fire reproduction and the first approximately 5 cm. The dark discoloration is still no fire: there must be really carbonised layer visible.
