FSC sapucaia is regularly available in the forests of Precious Woods, located in the Amazon region of Brazil. The tree reaches up to 35 m and the trunks are straight and cylindrical. The diameter varies from 50 to 100 cm.
Appearance:
The colour of the heartwood is yellow red brown, sometimes with darker stripes. Remarkable are the dark gum veins, which appear on the surface as dark lines. The sapwood is lighter in colour and easy to distinghuish. The grain is straight, sometimes interlocked. The texture is medium coarse.
Working properties:
Despite the high density, machining goes well. The silica content can give a blunting effect. The machined timber becomes smooth. Pre-drilling is necessary. Gluing and finishing are reported to be good. Drying requieres care, due to the tendency to check and warp. The timber has also a tendency to end-checking.
Durability:
Very durable
Uses:
Sapucaia is mainly used in outside constructions such as sheetpiling, piles and decking.
