FSC piquia marfim is available in modest quantities in the forests of Precious Woods, located in the Amazon region of Brazil. The trees reach up to 20-45 m with a diameter up to 90 cm. The trunks are 15-25 meters long.
Appearance:
The colour of the heartwood varies from orange brown to light pinkish red. The sapwood has a lighter colour and can be distinguished from the heartwood. The heartwood has a light and very fine stripy pattern. The grain is fairly straight with interlocked or irregular grain. The texture is medium fine to fine.
Working properties:
Despite the high density, piquia marfim is fairly easy to machine. A smooth result can be reached, with the right cutting angle. Pre-drilling is advised. With gluing and finishing are less experiences. Piquia marfim dries slowly with some risks of checking but higher risks of deformation.
